Located in the heart of the Greenwich Village Historic District, this apartment remodel required a sensitive approach to modernize a pre-war space while respecting its original character. STUDIO HUJI acted as the architect of record, managing the delicate balance between historic preservation and contemporary luxury.
Remodeling in a landmarked building presents unique administrative challenges. Our team successfully navigated the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) application process, ensuring all historic details met city standards. We also managed the strict Co-op Board review to ensure a smooth and expeditious approval for the client.
The remodel involved a comprehensive structural and aesthetic transformation of a 526 SF landmarked apartment. The primary challenge was maximizing a segmented pre-war floor plan. We unlocked the potential of the footprint by relocating both the kitchen and the full bathroom. A custom glass partition door was installed to brighten the narrow living room, transforming a dark studio into a bright, functional one-bedroom apartment.
