CONEY ISLAND AQUARIUM
CONEY ISLAND AQUARIUM
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the New York Aquarium, along with most of Coney Island, was destroyed. This project reimagines a revitalization of the amusement landmark, and protect the rest of Coney Island with a brand new aquarium equipped with flood resilient strategies to tie into the city’s 2006 master plan.
The Aquarium houses exhibits, research centers, ballrooms, and an outdoor exhibit that doubles as a flood retention pond. The boardwalk is also lifted to rest on top of the building, allowing visitors to experience Coney Island from the inside, below, or above the building. the aquarium fuses layers of community, tourism, and boardwalk, into a project that gives back to the neighborhood while anticipating and protecting Coney Island from future devastations that the coastline poses.
