In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, much of Coney Island, including the New York Aquarium, was devastated. This project reimagines a revitalized aquarium while protecting the surrounding neighborhood with a flood-resilient design aligned with the city’s 2006 master plan.
The new aquarium houses exhibits, research centers, ballrooms, and an outdoor exhibit that doubles as a flood retention pond. The boardwalk is lifted to rest atop the building, offering visitors the opportunity to experience Coney Island from above, below, or within the aquarium itself. By integrating layers of community, tourism, and boardwalk, the design both gives back to the neighborhood and anticipates future coastal challenges, creating a resilient landmark for generations to come.
